Ugoth stared at the air where Nicky had jumped. After a secondâs hesitation, he walked a pace forward. He stepped on plain earth and remained perfectly solid. âI suppose itâs only good for elves,â he muttered.
He turned and discovered that Herfod had vanished. âHerfod?â Panic set in. Herfod had followed her! Heâd abandoned him! âHerfod!â
A yelp in the darkness focused Ugothâs scattered mind. Pulling his sword, he rushed toward the sound. He halted in surprise. âUfrid?â
Herfod had his brother on the ground. Despite this surprise, the relief Ugoth felt at the sight of his lover almost melted his legs.
âLook what I caught while he was distracted,â Herfod sneered. âA peeper. Did you enjoy the show in the wagon, Ufrid?â
âGet off me!â Ufrid bellowed. He lay on his back and he lay very still. Herfod had a sharp dagger pointed straight at an eye.
âHe was watching?â Ugoth shouted. âSon of a bitch! Kill him!â
âNo! Iâm sorry!â Ufrid bleated. âDonât kill me!â
âI canât just kill him for watching us mess about,â the monk said.
âThen get out of my way!â Ugoth snarled.
âBe quiet, Ugoth,â Herfod said, but continued to glare down at the prince. âWhy were you watching, Ufrid?â
âI wanted to see what you were both doing,â Ufrid admitted. âIâve been watching since you stayed in his pavilion last night.â
âHave you? Why?â
âBecause you excite me!â he shouted. âGet off!â
âThatâs it! Iâm killing him.â Ugoth stalked forward, sword lifting. âGet off him, Herfod.â
âWell, that will make a good entry in the Ulmeniran histories,â Herfod said, staring evilly into Ufridâs eyes and making no motion to rise. âThis Year of Heavenâs Grace, Eight Hundred Ninety-three, King Ugoth the Second butchers his younger brother after learning Prince Ufrid watched him diddle a woman with another man. Youâll be well remembered, My Liege. King Ugoth, the Diddling Peeper Punisher.â
âShit!â Ugoth bellowed. âLet him go, then! Iâll give him a running start!â
Herfodâs weight left Ufridâs chest. Ufrid blinked. The dagger was gone.
âRun, Ufrid,â the monk warned him. Ufrid heaved up and ran. Behind him, Herfod tripped Ugoth and incapacitated him with his body.
âGet off!â the king shouted, shoving Herfod upward.
âUgoth! He was only watching. I used to watch.â
Ugoth stilled. âYou watched Nicky and me?â
âYes. You want to kill me?â
âDid you enjoy it?â
âYes,â came the answer. âI almost fell off a roof.â
Rather than killing him, Ugoth pulled him closer and kissed him. His grasp was desperate.
Herfod touched Ugothâs cheek. Tears wetted the skin. Herfod knew, then, that in another few seconds there wouldnât be any kisses, just broken sobs of grief and denial. The truth of his destiny had wormed further into the kingâs soul, and Ugoth wished to die no more than any man.
